How to Manage a Brand New Website: 5 Key Tips You Should Know

By August 17, 2018 No Comments

Launching a website is an exciting first step in a business’ online marketing plan. It can be tempting to celebrate your achievement, look at your website once, and then completely forget about it. This is one of the biggest mistakes you can make!

Once you’ve launched, you still need to know how to manage a website. That way you’ll make sure that visitors to your site have the best possible experience.

Read on for five key tips about managing a website.

1. Check Your Site Speed

How many times have you clicked away from a website because it was loading too slowly?

Load times are an important part of the user experience. If your website moves like molasses, you’ll probably notice some pretty high bounce rates.

You should set a schedule to make sure everything is running smoothly. Google has a free tool to help with this.

2. Read Through Your Content

Is your content optimized for search engines? Are there any spelling errors or typos that might make you look unprofessional?

You probably triple-checked your content before launch, but as time goes by, it’s easy to get complacent. You should always ensure that your content is working for you, not against you.

If multiple people proofread your content, that’s even better. They might catch a mistake that you missed.

3. Run Routine Tests

Just like you monitor your site speed, you should check other elements of your website as well. It’s important to check things like traffic and performance.

How many people are visiting your website per day? How are they interacting with your content? Knowing information like this will help you improve your user experience and your traffic.

If you notice that you’re not getting as many conversions as you want, you should test things like your headline and call to action. You might be surprised at the difference a small change can make!

4. Update Software And Plugins

Everything is constantly improving, so you need to make sure that your website has the latest updates. If your site runs on WordPress or a similar CMS, there are updates released regularly. It’s highly recommended to download these updates immediately.

Updating your website will make sure that it’s running optimally. You should also make sure that you’re updating your plugins, especially if you operate an e-commerce store as part of your website. The last thing you want is for customers to get an error message instead of a checkout page.

5. Back Up Your Website

Finally, always back up your website. Just like everything else online, websites can be hacked. Hopefully, your firewalls and other website security will help protect you from that.

In a worst-case scenario, though, you need to be able to get your website back up quickly. Every time you update your site, you should back it up to a secure location. Think of it like constantly saving your work in Microsoft Word.
